Network Map

The SPAN Network Visualization Tool allows you to explore relationships between members, networks, and organizations. The information you enter in your SPAN network profile updates the network map in real time–the more details you add to your network profile, the more impactful the network map will appear. Answering questions about if you currently collaborate/work or have collaborated/worked in the past with other members will create visual connections in the map. At the top of the map under “Southwest Practitioners Adaptation Network” click the following buttons to explore layers of the network map. You can have multiple layers turned on at one time.

  • Affiliation – Shows the affiliations of where SPAN members work. The larger the bubble, the greater the number of SPAN members who work at that organization/institution/company. Click the bubble to see more details, such as the exact number of SPAN members who have listed that entity as an affiliation.
  • Network – Shows the networks that are connected to SPAN through its members. The larger the bubble, the greater the number of SPAN members that are also a part of that network. Click the bubble to see more details, such as the exact number of SPAN members who have listed that entity as one of their networks. When the “network” and “person” layers are turned on, you are also able to see which SPAN members have a leadership role in other networks.
  • Person – Shows the people who make up SPAN and their connections to one another. A solid line between two people indicates they are current collaborators; a dashed line means they are past collaborators; and both means they are current and past collaborators. Click on a person’s bubble and you can see additional details found in their network profile, such as their email address, expertise areas, and skills.

Tips for using the network visualization tool:

  • Use the search function in the top left hand corner of the map to locate a person, network, or organization and select the data point.
  • Once you select a person or network, use the focus button on the right to zoom in on their connections. Hit it again to clear the focus. Use the plus (^) and minus (v) buttons to expand your focus to that person’s first, second, or higher degree connections or to contract the focus.
  • Use the zoom in and out buttons on the right hand side of the map to explore areas of the map in greater detail or to see all members of the network at one time.
